Film Photography Podcast – Episode 96 – February 1st, 2014
Shoe Notes by Alex Luyckx
In the studio is the whole gang, Mat (off Mic, he’s setting up a big softbox), Leslie, Michael, John, Mark and Dane! On today’s big shoe, Viviane Li interviews Louise Contino of the Picturing Wantee Project, Point-and-Shoot Cameras, Camera Giveaway, Listener Letters, and Tim-Tams…lots of Tim-Tams and more!
PICTURING WANTEETE – Kicking it off is FPP Correspondent interviewing Louise Contino. Louise (if you remember from last episode) is heading up the Picturing Wanatee Project which the FPP has supported by sending cameras and film.
Louise is a student and teaching assistant at the International Center for Photography (ICP) in New York City. A photographer at the beginning of her career, Louise linked into this project through her friend Sasha, who is the chairperson and founder of Spark Micro Grants. Spark is one of two major supporters of the project. The other is the BESO Foundation. Louise is going to the village of Wanteete, two hours outside of the city of Kampala in the African nation of Uganda. She will be working with a group who, on a small budget, constructed a school in their village. Louise intends to teach the members of the village (15 locals) how to develop and actually do the photo developing there in the village. The printing will take place in Kampala with Louise making contact sheets then letting the photographers pick their chosen images. Louise is self-funding the campaign, if you want to help contribute please check out the KickStarter page.

AIRPORT X-RAYS – Afraid of X-Rays damaging your film? Well there are ways of protecting them. You can purchase special bags lined with lead, or you can simply ask your friendly (or not so friendly) airport security agent to hand check your film. You can purchase such a bag at any major camera store. Mark has been conducting an experiment using two rolls of Fuji Superia 400, carrying one outside a film bag and one in through x-ray machines to see what the results are!
POINT & SHOOT 35mm CAMERAS – We’re giving some love to the Point-And-Shoot style of camera! Leslie presents the Olympus Stylus (or mju in Japan). This was the original camera in what would be a long line of cameras that continues today in Olympus’ digital offerings. The original Stylus was a workhorse, fixed lens (35mm f/3.5), auto exposure and auto focus. So popular in the 1990s that people would wear the cameras out and then come back for another one! Unlike many P&S (Point and Shoot) cameras of the day the Stylus could focus down to 13 and a half inches. New they retailed for $130.00 but these days you can find them for $3 at a local thrift store!
One of Dane’s favorite Point & Shoots is another Olympus, the Accura Zoom 80, another fully automatic camera but featuring a 38-80mm f/4.5-8.9 lens. It fits his description of what he looks for in P&S cameras – quick flash, auto focus, and costing 2 bucks. His other camera, a little older, the 1980s Konica C35 AF2, replacing the C35 AF (the world’s first commercially produced P&S Autofocus camera) features a Hexar 38mm f/2.8 lens, and takes incredible sharp photos, plus it’s built to last. The group all agrees when it comes to P&S their great you can just grab it and go!
WIN A P&S CAMERA! Want to give P&S a try? FPP Super Listener, Matt Ayers (and other FPPers) donated a pile – a whole box of random point-and-shoots! Head on over to the FPP Giveaway section for your chance to win a Point & Shoot 35mm Camera!
Now that was a bit of a free-for-all, but don’t worry, the next podcast is only two weeks (two weeks? Two Weeks? Ya sound like a bird)! Keep shooting!
Taking us out this week is another musical cut from FPP Super Friend Darren aka Ballard Pop (from his super album BUCKY!)
