PDN PhotoPlus Expooo Wrap Up “Shoe” – FPP Episode 70, Nov 15th, 2012
The invasion is on and the FPP descends once again on the PDN (Photo District News) PhotoPlus Expo here in New York City at the Jacob Javit’s Convention Centre. The entire FPP Gang – Michael Raso, John Fedele, Mark Dalzell, Dane Johnson, Mat Marrash, Hunter White and you – the listeners!
Our good friends in the Gold and Red, Kodak where more than happy to see the FPP group as they handed out film like candy to anyone who came by their booth! All of us at FPP want to make a huge shout-out to the fine folks at Kodak for their continued and ongoing support of our humble podcast by providing boxes of film to giveaway to participants at the many meet-ups over the past two years!
Mat got the chance to sit down and interview Tim Ryugo, a 30 year veteran of Kodak and in charge of sales for North American west of the Mississippi. Of course the one thing on everyone’s mind is what’s going on with Kodak’s film division? Well things are looking really good as Tim chats with a smile – revenues are up! He counts this for the strong support from professional photographers and younger photographers in schools that still have a good traditional photography program.
Support is so good that Kodak just released their Professional Film App for iOS (iPhone, iPod Touch, iPad). The App contains everything you need to know about Kodak’s professional film line, Portra, Ektar, Tmax, and Tri-X. There are also details on where you can buy and get your film processed, and which films are best for various applications. Best part, it’s free on the iTunes App Store!
Also at the Kodak booth is long time FPP friend and Large Format Photographer Keith Canham. Keith operates a company that not only builds large format cameras but also serves as a supplier of odd and big sizes of large format films. “Film orders are flying,” Keith says, and he can offer anyone any size film in all the common Kodak stocks (Portra, Ektar, Tmax, Tri-X). You’ll need to put in a large order, but in the end, it’s an investment. “You can’t buy film like you did in the past,” Keith continues, “you can’t just walk down to your local photo store and expect them to have the stock you need, especially in large format, you need to buy several months in advance and have stock on hand to meet any situation you go into.” Keith also was pleased to announce a 11×14 back that will allow your 8×10 camera to shoot in the 11×14 format! Keep an eye on their website for details (or if you’re interested in one of his cameras.)
Another long time support of the FPP is one of the two men behind the mail in film lab The Darkroom, Phil Steblay. Phil / The Darkroom are behind the massive find of cold stored Fuji 200 speed 110 film that’s still on sale at the FPP store. The Darkroom is a traditional film lab out of California that uses the dip-and-dunk method for very clean processing, and they cover B&W, C-41, and E-6 is every format from 110 all the way up to 8×10! They even do older obsolete formats such as 116. The people at The Darkroom are passionate and master craftsmen when it comes to lab work, pulling images out of film fifty or sixty years old!
John and Hunter were busy interviewing all the listeners and contributors to the FPP community who was at the PhotoPlus Expo this year.
Wouldn’t be a proper Meet-Up without a Pentax K-1000 in the house!
Long time listener and contributor Alex from Canada (hey, that’s me!), showing off his Pentax Auto 110. (Earlier that week I was spreading the news around New York that film is far from dead to anyone willing to listen). Dane and Mark are coming up on their one year anniversary of shooting film. Dane is aiming to go simpler, and just get out there and shoot; using box cameras or program mode and autofocus on newer SLRs. Mark is still all over the place 110, 35mm 120, Polaroid – he just wants to try it all! Also joining the group today was Jim Peruta, a long time listener of the podcast and a long time film shooter for the past 35 years. Brandon Nedwek, a regular to many of the FPP meetups over the past year showed up at the Expo armed with his Hasselblad – he had too much 120 film so he went a little light (he shoots large format as well). Bryan, another familiar face having been to the New York City meet back in may showed up with his K1000 – he and FPP listener Ted Galucci also enjoys Stereo photography using a pair of twin-lens cameras a custom bracket and a special technique on the cable releases. RazzleDazzle – Joseph Brunjes brought along a unique piece, an old Polaroid Roll film camera, converted in Australia to shoot 4×5 film, and called the Razzle 900. Andy Sutcliffe, another old hand at FPP meetups comes armed with a Polaroid Spectra, a Mju-II (Stylus Epic), and a mini Leica but he much prefers shooting slide film in his Nikon FM2n. The other Mike – Michael Sanchez (as Hunter calls him) explains that Digital is slowly reaching its peak, and film is still where it’s at, as his shows off his Nikon F100.
One of the more unique booths at the Expo was the booth for Photoville. Photoville, Laura explains was a big outdoor photo exhibit based out of shipping containers that ran from June 22nd, to July 1st this past summer. It really aimed to bring photography back into the public eye with exhibits and supports from clubs, schools, and newspapers from around the world.
Mat and Mike take a breather from The PDN roll-ins to chat about the Book of the Month. This month’s book / magazine is a beautiful piece from Life Magazine called Life With the Beatles. Mat’s not a super fan of the Brit-Rock band that skyrocketed to fame through the 1960s, but he loves the photography in the book, featuring photos that had never or rarely seen of the band behind the scene or in recording sessions. You can pick it up on newsstands now or on Amazon.
Back to the Expo the FPP pays a visit to the Freestyle Photographic Booth, Hunter interviews the author and plastic camera photographer Michelle Bates. How did she get into using such toy cameras, she explains it was at a Maine Media Workshop, where they actually used the Holga (it still is her go-to toy camera) and she hasn’t looked back since. In fact she was approached to produce a book on the subject, which now is at its Second Edition. You can find more of Michele’s work at her website, and you can pick up her book at her other site. Patrick DelliBovi from Freestyle takes some time to share what’s new at Freestyle, other than the fact they’ve dropped their minimum order, they’re still angling towards the alternative processes and most importantly the print itself.
And last but far from least, Brandon Remler from Fujifilm North America, who is a huge fan and avid listener of the podcast joins the gang. Fuji is still very committed to film he says, being the only company that still produces E-6 slide film, and type-100 pack film both of which they do plan to continue to produce.
They even are committed to their Instax line of instant camera even releasing a new one the Instax Mini 8. If you’re interested in winning a Fuji Instax Mini 7s, head on over to our giveaway page! Brandon then opens up the vault and hands out all the film that they have on hand. Mat walks away with some 8×10 Provia, and Hunter and Mike leaving with some 4×5 slide films to try out.
FujiFilm North America and FPP present out camera giveaway – The Fujifilm Instax Mini 7s + Two-Pack of Film!!!!
