Film Photography Podcast – Episode 107 – July 15th, 2014
Show Notes By: Alex Luyckx
This show Mat Marash has hit the road pushing the pedal to the metal up I-75 to the lovely Harbor Springs, Michigan and the rustic Birchwood Inn for the amazing Photostock 2014 event and brings us interviews with Polly Chandler, Eliot Dudik, Clay Lipsky, Ryan Zoghlin, and Bill Schwab!
Breaking News – On August 23rd 2014, Mat will be hosting a workshop at the Midwest Photo Exchange Learning Studio (3313 N High St, Columbus, Ohio). The workshop, Shooting Film in a Digital World, will cover everything from getting the camera loaded and ready to shoot, to developing, scanning, and posting your images. The cost of the workshop is 99$ and is limited to 30 participants. You can sign up at http://mpex.com/shooting-film-8-23-14.html
Photo Stock 2014! Kicking it off is the lovely Polly Chandler. Polly is a fantastic Polaroid photographer, working posting in 4×5 with the amazing Type 55, but also with medium format as well. When Type 55 was discontinued she went and maxed out a credit card to fill her fridge with boxes of the film! So when the New55 came along she was rather excited, and even had one of her test images on the new film featured on their site, and she has been actively promoting it. Her love of the film came out of working with it through graduate school, she describes it as a love affair. To check out more of her stunning work, you can visit her website at: pollychandler.com.
Next up is large format photographer and bookmaker Eliot Dudik. And he is all over the place with his photo projects. Such as “Ends in Water” and “Broken Landscapes”. Broken Landscapes is unique in the fact that he is using two sheets of 8×10 colour film (Kodak), in a 8×20 ultra-large format camera to capture landscape shots of American Civil War battlefields, the project also spawned a spin off project “Still Lives” a portrait project that featured American Civil War Reenactors, but presented in such a way, that makes them seem to be floating above the ground. The effect is achieved by pointing the camera directly down on the subject, while they lay on a platform that lifts them off the ground. He’s also working on a project on the Mississippi River Delta with other photographers and a new one “Paradise Road” capturing as many Paradise Roads in the United States. And with all the projects he somehow manages to keep everything straight and in his head. Looking see some of his stunning work, check out his site at: eliotdudik.com!
Mat next sits down with Clay Lipski. Clay is mostly known for his viral project “Atomic Overlook” a neat blend of 1950s atomic bomb test shots with modern tourists. The project was huge in both the US and Europe, and just spread like wildfire. Clay has also, through North Light Press, published a book in their 11+1 signature series, the book, Inconcrete features Impossible Project Polaroid shots of infrastructure, and each book comes with an original Polaroid by Clay. He also mentions his latest project, In Dark Light, which is a blend of landscapes and portraits, mostly from his latest trip to Iceland with Bill Schwab. You can follow Clay’s work at his website: www.claylipsky.com.
Mat was able to catch Ryan Zoghlin just before he had to hit the rickety road. This year Ryan presented a rather unique project of his called Talisman, the project was designed to be carried with you, sort of a good luck charm, rather than be hung on a wall or put on display. It was designed to generate sentimental value with the person who carries it, rather than monetary value. The idea came out of a tiredness of the process of getting work on the wall. He wanted to create something for the individual. You can see Ryan’s work online at: rfoto.com.
And last, but certainly not least, the man himself and ever humble, Bill Schwab. Bill continues to be in awe of how much Photostock has grown, this year with the one hundred attendees, the event filled up two hotels (the Birchwood and the Colonial) and part of the Best Western and the local State Park with campers! The print exchange this year has also grown with 48 people participating, and everyone walking away happy because the caliber of work being exchanged has just continued to grow! His workshop facility on his own property, which was unveiled last year has already hosted five successful workshops, and the interior construction is nearly complete. Also this year at Photostock, Bill hosted a fantastic roundtable discussion on the state of the Photographic industry and the art as a whole. It really brought together the group with their varied and wide range of experiences, and brought up the danger of giving your work away for free, and how just getting ‘exposure’ never pays off. If you missed out on the summer event, consider checking out the new Fall Photostock Event, running October 9th to 12th in the Emmet County/Habor Springs area. While it won’t be like the summer event with a schedule and presenters it will just be good company with some amazing photographer in a beautiful part of Michigan.
