Film Photography Podcast – Episode 75 – February 1, 2013
Show Notes by Alex Luyckx
On today’s show (what show!?) Mark’s Good and Crappy Cameras, the Mamyia C220, Darkroom Tips, the Instant-tastic Giveaway, Listener Letters, Book of the Month, music and More! Hosted by Michael Raso, John Fedele, Mat Marash, Dane Johnson, and Mark Dallzel!
The show takes right off as Mark brings out some of his latest crappy camera finds. First up the toy Action Tracker, this four lens camera is very similar to the Action Sampler available from Lomography. The camera’s four 26mm f/11 lenses each capture a series of images over the course of 1 second. “It’s a great little toy,” Mark says, “works well outside with any speed film (just watch the lighting conditions), and the best part only cost 49 cents”!
The second camera is the rather unique Vivitar 3D Cam, which produces both normal 2D images, and a special transposed 3D image (that requires a special view to look at the prints to see the 3D effect. The camera sports 35mm f/5.6 lenses, and two shutter speeds. The camera was actually manufactured by Loreo, the company still is around and produces novelty cameras and accessories.
There’s crappy and then there’s just bad. Ebay seems to start being flooded by cheap knock off cameras that look (and are often marketed) as the real deal Canon, Nikon, Yashica, Olympus, and to an untrained eye may just pass off. But buyer beware, these in fact are far from the camera you’re expecting. Mark shows off his Olympia GM826. It’s just bad he says, many of these cameras have weights inside them to give some semblance, but the Olympia does not. It weighs less than a cardboard box Mike laughs. Keep an eye out for good deals on what could be the SLR of your dream, check the name, and as always talk to the seller and see if they can give you that if you can’t see it in the image. The photos are just plain bad, the cheapest plastic is used. But if you happen to use and like these oddballs, by all means drop us a line, podcast@filmphotographyproject.com
Mr. Raso has a new camera as well, the Pentax P3, which as he went to load film into it the film rewind crank (and door release) snapped off. This is common, Mark explains for those cameras, the manufacture is fairly weak and brittle. But it’s an easy fix, two screws and 30 seconds and as long as you find a spare one, you’ll be back in business. Despite this, Mike loves the camera! It’s a good solid shutter sound plus being a Pentax K-Mount, you have a very wide selection of lenses.

The book of the month comes from FPP super friend Jim “Jimages” Austin – both the FPP studio and Mat received a wonderful book in a bottle, The World of Henri Cartier-Bresson, the man whose name is synonymous with street photography. The book has both Mat and Mike in awe at the amazing body of work displayed. However it is an older book and HCB’s work is highly sought after. You may have to go to Ebay or find a really good used bookstore or maybe a camera fair. There are a few left for sale on Amazon. It’s worth your while to pick it up if you’re big into street photography. The book will make an excellent addition to the ever growing FPP Library.
Yes, the FPP is giving away three, count them, three Polaroid cameras this month in the Incredible Instant Giveaway. How do you enter, simple, sign up in our giveaways section. The third place winner will walk away with a Polaroid 600 OneStep CloseUp which will include a pack of Impossible PX680 Color Protection film, the second place winner will get a New-In-Box Polaroid Impulse Camera and a pack of PX680 Color Protection film, and the first place winner will get a wonderfully wide Polaroid Spectra Autofocus camera and PZ680 Color Protection film, the Spectra care of FPP Super friend Leslie from Image That!
Mark brings out the feature top of the line camera for the show, the frankly massive Mamyia C220. This fully featured professional Twin Lens Camera was first produced in 1968 and is the only TLR (other than the rest of the C-Line of TLRs) to feature interchangeable lenses. Mamyia put out seven prime lenses for the camera, including a 55, 65, 80, 105, 135, 180, and 250mm units. The camera also supported 120 and 220 film without major modifications; just flip the pressure plate around. Mark loves it and at a cost of $50.00 it’s a real steal! It’s big, it’s heavy, and it will be a conversation piece out on the street. Mark also got a prism finder for it with a full uncoupled light meter which works.
And that’s all from us for the camera portion, as we continue on into the music part featuring several local artists and FPP friend bands such as the Pink Delicates, and Smoove Sailors!
This show’s Inner Groove features Ballard Pop! Kilsy, Pink Delicates and The Smoove Sailors!
