Film Friday - 29 March 2013

Posted: 03/29/2013

Hi fellow film shooters! The Film Friday blog is here to update you on all the cool film-related things happening in and around The Film Photography Podcast (Ya know, The FPP!). For those of you who don't know, the FPP is the long-running Internet Radio Show for people who love to shoot film produced and hosted by yours truly! So, what's happening? Read on...

"A carbon print is a photographic print with an image consisting of pigmented gelatin, rather than of silver or other metallic particles suspended in a uniform layer of gelatin, as in typical black-and-white prints, or of chromogenic dyes, as in typical photographic color prints." -

So what is carbon printing and what is the process. Jump over to the Mat Marrash website for his entire Carbon Journal! Mat will explain all(start with the March 12, 2013 entry)!

Back in July (FPP Episode 63) Mat Marrash chatted up the concept of shooting 8x10 Medical X-Ray Film in his large format camera! It's an inexpensive way to get into large format photography. The film is black and white and can be processed in just about any BW processing chemical.

The X-Ray film is available in boxes of 100 sheets and can easily be cut down to fit your 4x5 film holders or even roll your own 120! This past week, I grabbed a box of Super Blue X-Ray film and cut my own. The wonderful thing about the film is that you can cut it in your dark room using a 7w Red Kodak Safe Light!

I cut down an 8x10 sheet to 4x5 size for my Graflex Crown Graphic camera (image above). I also cut strips for 120 size and rolled the film onto a spool with backing paper to shoot in my Yashica A TLR camera (image below). Images shot 25 asa in daylight. The film is super sensitive to scratches! The FAIL occurred when I processed the film in a tray with other sheets of film. Both images were processed in Caffenol (FPP Pancho Blend)

I'm re-shooting this weekend and plan on being super careful to avoid scratches this time! More on shooting X-Ray film in the coming weeks. In the meantime, why not give it a try?! You can purchase the film here in the states at CSX Online or help support the FPP and buy it in our On-Line Shop (We ship internationally!)
