Polaroid Land Camera explosion! DIY Camera Mods! 110 Film Returns! Is the Lomo-Look Family Friendly? Hosted by Michael Raso, Mat Marrash,  John Fedele and new guy Dane “Smoove Sailor” Johnson!

Show Notes by Dan Domme

It's the Fall FPP Vacation Show!  Join hosts Michael Raso, Mat Marrash and John Fedele, along with special guest and FPP newbie, Dane Johnson of The Smoove Sailors as they discuss life, music, and of course, film photography.

Dane proves to be no outsider as he delves headfirst into his rapid onset of acute G.A.S.!  (That’s gear acquisition syndrome for those of you not “in the know.”)  Hear about all the film cameras that Dane has picked up for ridiculous prices, and some of the hoops he’s had to jump through to modify them into working (or selectively faulty) condition.  You may quickly become inspired to dive in and hack up your next $3 thrift store find.  Yes, you too can treat your G.A.S. illness for cheap!

above: Yes, It's the Minnie Pearl of Cameras! Dane's modified Kodak X-15 126 camera

Furthermore, Dane and John discuss the genesis and evolution of The Smoove Sailors. Learn about their early days, their creative process, and even their prodigious roster.

Learn about a forgotten printing process as we place a call to Mat Marrash, who’s on the road.  Learn what shady activity Mat suggests instead of hunting down this rare process wherein you can optically print slides.  Furthermore, in the FPP Minute, Mat breaks down what you need to know about getting started in large format by breaking down what types of cameras there are!

FPP Mat calls in from the road and contributes the Mat Marrash Minute!

Don’t forget to tune in to the next show, when we’ll be going over our trip to the PDN Photoplus Expo to cover all the exhibitors and our meetup with listeners!  As always, it’s only two weeks away!

What show?????

Looks like a packtastic episode. Packed with information and fun, that is! Perfect timing on the large format portion for me. Just had an old Polaroid 110A modified to take 4x5 film.

Can't wait for that Super8 footage!

You guys continue to inform and entertain. I have listened religiously since the inception of the FPP as well as several other podcasts. Guess what? You're the only one that I listened to that is still going strong! Keep making great episodes and thanks for supporting all of us "analogues" out there.

Thanks for the comments, folks! We're strongly committed to the art of film photography and I feel that the best is yet to come. Viva FPP!

This was a great episode indeed! I'm so intrigued by Dane and all the cameras he buys and the experiments he does. Can't wait to hear more from him. Also, I'm very jealous that you guys seem to be able to get cameras for really cheap at flea markets and car boot sales. Whenever I go to a place like this in London or Berlin, the cameras are always super expensive! Maybe I need to find a small town flea market and hope that people have no idea about the cameras that they're selling... Oh, and great write up, Dan!

Rabea,
In my limited camera-buying experience (just started this summer), the prices for these cameras are all over the place.

One guy will have a dead Polaroid 600 for $10 (good luck, sucker!), while three rows over there is a vintage One-Step "Rainbow" and two packs of film for $5 (SOLD!)

I bought a Japanese K1000, with 50mm lens for $15. I didn't know anything about it at the time, but it was in good shape, and I loved mechanical sound of the mirror. It takes great photos! And apparently it is worth $50 or more...?

Just keep going. Half the fun is looking at old stuff. I love old stuff.

Keep at it.

Will

OK - I love the knotted thread for the instamatic with 35mm film. Someone must get a video of him macgyvering the camera - I would love that :-) ~andrea

I have several 35mm cameras, but never used the polaroid SSI 124E. I got one recently and need to know the film it uses and any other information and tips that might help. Does someone know this camera?

I have quite a few Polaroid Passport cameras here at the studio but do not own the Polaroid SSI 124E.

They're fun, especially when guests drop by the studio but I usually only recommend as a novelty camera only. Recommendations go to the Polaroid Colorpack II or Automatic Land Camera.
